Transcript of text: - Page 01. DERRYLEMLEARY. Near Ballineen. - Not mentioned by Smith. - Lewis. Vol.I. p.458. An interesting ruin. - Cork Journal. 1904. p.5. The Clan Crimin branch of the MacCarthys in E. Carbery had two castles, this and Ballinorougher. This branch was powerful up to the time of the Cromwellian confiscations. Part of this country, including Castle Derry, was in King James grant to O'Donovan of Clanloughlin. - Cork Journal 1906. p.29. The O'Hurleys owned Derry, Monteen and Ballinvoher. Dermot O'Hurley, surnamed Light Footed, is said to have owned them in James II's time. (Bennett) - 1935. A small Keep in good condition, situated in a rather isolated position in a little valley. Its distance from any house may account for its escape from destruction. There seems to have been no vaulted floor in the main part of the tower, corbels show where two floors once were. The stairs are narrow, in good condition, with steps up to a little corner look out on the parapet. One small room opens off the stairs above the doorway, it has a stone floor still perfect. Transcript of text: - A small keep in good condition. It belonged to the Clan Cremin branch of the MacCarthys, powerful until the Cromwellian confiscations.
