Kam Tin gates, Myrtle Grove, Youghal : graphic
Photograph of the gates of Myrtle Grove in Youghal. These gates were originally located in the Kam Tin region of China, part of the territories transferred to Great Britain in 1898. The British received a frosty welcome from the locals in Kam Tin who refused to allow them to pass through the gates into their villages. To gain access, the British blew down the walls flanking the gates. In an act of submission, the villagers removed the gates and carried them to Flag Staff Hill where they were admired by Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Henry Blake. The gates were transported to Blake's residence at Myrtle Grove in Youghal where they hung until the Chinese Government petitioned for their return in 1924, a request that was granted by Lady Blake at this time. The photograph depicts a representative from the Chinese Government who travelled to Youghal to oversee the removal of the gates and their safe return to Kam Tin where they were reinstated during a ceremony of re-opening in 1925.
