<text> Transcript of text: - "The Black Castle". Built on an island approached by a narrow passage. It was taken in 1602 by the Lord president of Munster, Carew. Said to have been built by Connor O'Mahony (d. 1473) son of Dermod Runtach. 1622 this property was leased to Sir Wm. Hull. Irish state papers tell of pirates who anchored in Lyme Con bay and traded with Sir Wm. Hall. Down Survey 1657 calls all these castles "ruinous". - Rosbrin, Near Ballydehob, 1936. Smith says the ruins of a castle built by the O'Mahonys on a rock overhanging the ocean. Carew demolished it and battered the W. wall to the ground. The owner turned pirate in Elizabeth's day. Lewis says here was written the "Psalter of Rosbrin" by a Bard of the O'Mahonys. The Book of Lough says that Finghen (a son of Dermod Runtach _ 1400) got it. He was a learned man, chief of the clan. D. 1496. Noted for his humanity and hospitality. No MS of the Psalter has been seen since Smith's time. - Download size (PDF): 106 KB. Image no Vol_06-36.</text>

It was the property of the Fitzgeralds and was a dower house for widows of the Desmond family. The walls are from 8-12 ft. thick There is an account of it in Sainthill's "Old Countess of Desmond". This lady lived here for 70 years and died in 1604 tradition says aged 140. Ralegh later owned this property and sold it to Boyle. It was stormed by Cromwell and a boat battered the walls from the river. Lord Ponsonby built on an abutment to preserve it but the river undermined it and part fell in 1850. The castle is not built on rock which is most unusual and the tides have shaken the building. - Download size (PDF): 463 KB. Image no Vol_06-30.</text>

<text> Transcript of text: - Smith (1750) describes this as ruins of a sumptuous castle built by the Flemings and afterwards owned by the Roches. There is a high tower erected on arched vaults and around it a strong wall flanked with turrets. Amy Fleming married Roche who was a soldier of fortune and built many castles. In 1601 Lord Fermoy occupied it but the property was fortified after 1641. The castle was besieged by Ireton and surrendered. There were two distinct keeps, one square, the other a ruined oblong building with a slender tower. - The long narrow bridge was built in 1446. <text> Transcript of text: - Smith says that in James I's reign (1603-25) the O'Callaghans built a statley house on the foundations of a castle. There was a very large Bawn, flanked by towers, and at the junction of the S.E. walls a Columbarium, now a ruin. In 1600 a poet called O'Daly described a visit to Dromineen in a half joking poem. Windele says that the building is an example of the last phase of castellation, with carved doors, mullions and mantelpieces. After 1641 it was granted to Sir Richard Kyrle and later sold to the Newman family (1686). Dillon Newman restored it in 1694. He died in 1739 and his widow left it. Soldiers were quartered in it and it fell into disrepair. - See Cork Arch. & Hist. Jour. 1897 & 1914, and Grove White's Notes. - Download size (PDF): 208 KB. Image no Vol_06-27.</text>
