It was a very strong castle garrisoned by the Earl of Desmond against the forces of Elizabeth. This estate was sold to Sir R. Boyle after the Sugar Earl was attainted in 1601. In Cromwell's time it was owned by the the Clifford family, in 1690 Capt. Clifford married a Miss Moore of Aghern.
